Engineering students are enjoying colorful, new furniture and additional seating in the Engineering Lobby this fall.  Two student teams from Rolf Norgaard’s “Technical Communication and Design” course surveyed students, assessed the lobby needs, and wrote design proposals on the redesign and selection of new furniture. The college used the recommendations to purchase an assortment of study tables and chairs, high-back booths, writing easels, café stools and tables, and upholstered chairs.

College Rankings
The undergraduate engineering program at CU-Boulder was tied for 21st (with UC-Santa Barbara and Iowa State University) among public universities offering doctoral degrees in the 2006 Best Colleges ranking by U.S. News & World Report. In the engineering ranking including all doctoral universities, public and private, CU-Boulder was tied for 36th. The college’s undergraduate program in aerospace engineering sciences was ranked 12th among public and 17th overall.

Active Learning Fair
The college will host the second annual Active Learning Fair on Wed., Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Engineering Lobby. The fair is held to publicize active learning opportunities to our students and is one way that we are trying to meet the college's strategic plan goal of "expanded opportunities for all undergraduate students to participate in one or more extracurricular enrichment experiences of discovery learning, professional learning, or service learning before graduation, with at least one-third of the undergraduate population participating each year by FY08." Technology Transfer
Carlos Matos, a computer science student working with Associate Dean John Bennett, developed some computer software that is now being commercialized by GleeCo. The company was co-founded by Lorraine Ramig of CU-Boulder’s Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences to commercialize products related to the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), a method for improving the speech of patients with Parkinson’s Disease. The LSVT-companion software takes a patient through the same therapy steps that a patient would go through with a live clinician. GleeCo plans to introduce it to clinicians to supplement one-on-one treatment.
