ITP to Provide Training in Northern Iraq
The Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program has been asked to provide training and education to engineers in northern Iraq to help rebuild and improve their telecommunications systems and infrastructure. At the request of Lt. Col. Welton Chase, a 1998 graduate of ITP and commander of the 501st Signal Battalion, Senior Instructor Gerald Mitchell and PRA Jeffrey St. Pierre have made arrangements to deliver certificate programs in Mosul and Sulaymaniyah starting later this month. New Center Established on Unmanned Vehicles
A new interdisciplinary research center has been established in the college focusing on the design, build and test of unmanned vehicles for scientific, industrial and military applications. The center, called the Research and Engineering Center for Unmanned Vehicles (RECUV), involves faculty and students in aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, interdisciplinary telecommunications and mechanical engineering. Professor George Morgenthaler is the primary investigator and interim director of the center; Professors Brian Argrow and Harvey Gates are co-PIs.

Design Expo Registration Due by Nov. 14
Engineering faculty and instructors with students who wish to participate in the Fall 2003 Design Expo (held in the ITLL on Saturday, Dec. 6) should remind their student teams to complete a registration form by Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.  Blank registration forms are available on the Design Expo Web site,

Industry Supports ME Senior Design Projects
The Industry/University Cooperative Projects Center (I/UCPC) in the Mechanical Engineering Department has received 17 sponsored projects for senior design from various companies, government labs, and other organizations. The ME Department will receive approximately $180,000 in fees for these projects. A partial list of the sponsors includes Ball Aerospace, Ball Container, BP Petroleum, Boeing, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Maxtor, MicroMotion, NREL, StorageTek, Seagate, Sikorsky, USSA (U.S. ski team) and Valleylab.

Honors and Awards
Faculty
Brian Argrow of Aerospace Engineering was selected as Runner Up for Best Teacher in the Daily Camera's Best of Boulder survey released in September.
Scott Palo of Aerospace Engineering has been selected by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, as the Northwest Regional Young Investigator for 2004. One of six regional finalists will receive the 2004 Young Investigator Award in November.
Dirk Grunwald of Computer Science, in conjunction with the Stevens Institute of Technology and Vanu Inc., has been awarded an $800,000 NSF grant for research in wireless networking.
Doug Hensler of Engineering Management has been invited to serve as an adviser to the Special Adviser team for the Scottish First Minister, Jack McConnell.
Staff
Matthew Rhode, shop manager in Aerospace Engineering Sciences, was selected to receive the Employee Recognition Award for September.
Students
Andrew Azman, a BS/MS student in environmental engineering, received the David Brower Youth Award Sept. 25 in Berkeley, Calif., for his work on converting the CU Buff Bus fleet to biodiesel. The award is given annually to six of the nation’s most successful young environmentalists.
