ITL Spring Design Expo
CU
engineering students put on a terrific show for the hundreds of people who
turned out for the ITL Spring Design Expo on April 29. Children and their
parents enjoyed navigating a 3-D maze, launching water balloons and
plastic foam missiles, and eating smores from a Rube Goldberg machine,
among other activities. More than 100 student projects were demonstrated,
including many educational toys and interactive learning exhibits designed
to teach children about engineering principles. Students from Centaurus
High and Angevine Middle schools in Lafayette also participated, showing
projects they built in pre-engineering classes with involvement from the
ITL Program. Prizes were awarded for the best project in each section of
the First-Year Engineering Projects course; and the aerospace engineering
senior design team consisting of students
Christopher Coley,
Ryan Clifford,
Casey Fillmore,
Chris Kerker,
Michael King,
Chris McLeod,
Jeremy Ralph
and Matthew Straussberg
won the People’s Choice award for their design of a Bolt-on Racecar
Enhancing Wing.

MEP Recognition Gala
The
Multicultural Engineering Program held its 20th Annual Recognition Gala,
“Building a Foundation for Success,” April 7 at the Stadium Club. The gala
brought together 250 people from the academic and corporate arenas to
celebrate the achievements of current students, honor prospective MEP
students who have been accepted into the college for fall 2006, and
recognize active alumni for their professional successes and contributions
to the program. Jeff Henry,
a graduating senior in mechanical engineering, received the MEP
Outstanding Senior Award for his dedication to MEP and the students he
tutors, his huge academic gains, and his collegial attitude. Henry’s
mentor, integrated physiology Professor
Rodger Kram,
was awarded the Faculty Appreciation Award, and ITLL Electronics Center
Manager Tim May
received the Staff Appreciation Award for his dedication and eagerness to
help students with their projects.

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
The
National Institutes of Health has renewed its grant to the Leadership in
Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Training Program for another five years. The
grant, which is guided by the Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology,
will provide about $1.5 million for graduate student support over the next
five years for students in the departments of chemical and biological
engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, and chemistry and biochemistry. With
additional university matching funds, about 60 student-years of support
will be provided. The training program is closely aligned with industry;
industrial representatives sponsor mentoring visits and internships, and
serve on thesis committees, among other activities.
