WIEP Hosts Discover Engineering
Day
The Women in Engineering Program’s Discover Engineering Day on Feb. 23
was a huge success, drawing 140 female high school students and
approximately 30 teachers, counselors, and parents from across Colorado
and even out of state to learn about the exciting field of engineering.
The event exposed attendees to engineering through hands-on
demonstrations hosted by faculty from various departments in the
college.
Activities including Mike Eisenberg’s Computer Origami and Space Grant’s
Lego Challenge received rave reviews from participants. The high school
students also got a taste of campus life at CU through a campus tour led
by female CU engineering students and lunch in the dining halls. They
wrapped up their day with a high-energy department fair, where faculty,
staff and students from several departments engaged participants in
one-on-one conversations and used dynamic visual displays to highlight
the exciting research and career opportunities within the different
engineering majors.
Because space was limited for the Feb. 23 event, the Women in
Engineering Program has decided to host an encore event later in the
semester: “Spring into Engineering Day” on April 18 will feature a
similar variety of activities designed to show high school women how
they can make a difference through math, science, and engineering. The
Women in Engineering Program would like to applaud its student program
managers, Sara Witte, Audrey Schaiberger, and Holly Hughes, for
coordinating this exceptional event and recognize the many faculty and
department representatives who made Discover Engineering Day a success.
Engineering Awards Banquet

Honors and Awards
Congratulations
to the following individuals on their outstanding achievements.
Faculty
Xinzhao Chu
of aerospace engineering sciences has been selected to receive a CAREER
award from the National Science Foundation, aeronomy program. The
five-year award will support her in using global lidar data in
combination with satellite data and atmospheric general circulation
models to study the thermal structure and dynamics of the global
mesosphere and lower thermosphere region. She also will develop a
series of lidar and remote sensing courses and establish a lidar
education base at Table Mountain.
Al Gasiewski
of
electrical and computer engineering received the 2006 Bronze Medal from
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for his role as one
of two co-scientists for NOAA’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle demonstration
program, the first airborne campaign using a UAV in support of NOAA
mission goals.
Gerhard Fischer
of
computer science has been elected to the Computer-Human Interaction
Academy based on his distinguished career in the application of
computational technology to important social issues. He was recognized
with the award at the CHI 2007 Conference in San Jose, Calif.
Vince Heuring
of
electrical and computer engineering co-authored with Miles Murdocca the
book "Computer Architecture and Organization," recently published by
John Wiley & Sons.
Ryan Gill
of chemical and biological engineering received the Rising Star Award
for CU at the Big 12 CEDIC Innovation and Capital Formation Conference
in Kansas City.
Staff
Sarah Kiel
of aerospace engineering sciences received the Employee Recognition
Award for March.
Dean’s office staff
Carol Rowe
and Lelei Finau-Starkey,
along with former staff
Kristin Germain and Holly Nikolich, and Amy Miller of CU Publications

Welcome to
the following new faculty and staff in the college:
Carrie Goldin,
Director of Alumni Relations
Tip Anderson,
Manager of Budget and Finance
Amy Arenson,

Greg Potts,
Lab Coordinator, ME
In Memory Of
The college
suffered the loss of two beloved faculty and staff members who died in
February:
KC Gupta, professor emeritus of electrical and computer
engineering, and
Patricia Roll, longtime staff
member
in aerospace engineering sciences. Professor Gupta was a great
contributor to the field of microwaves and electromagnetics; his
colleagues are planning a special memorial session at the IEEE
International Microwave Symposium in June. Services for Pat Roll, who
worked at BioServe and then CCAR for a total of 15 years, have already
been held.
