BioServe Launch

BioServe Space Technologies launched its first payload aboard a Russian Progress rocket (13P mission) to the International Space Station in late January. It is the first payload that BioServe has launched on a Russian vehicle, although the center sent some experiments via the space shuttle to Mir. The Group Activation Packs Yeast Experiment, which is part of NASA’s biotechnology cell science research, was subsequently activated on the ISS.

BioServe also continues to support various other investigators’ experiments (going up on Russian launches or using materials existing on ISS) with one of its thermal control lockers that has been stranded on the space station since October 2002 since it requires a shuttle for return. For a summary page of BioServe flight activities, go to www.colorado.edu/engineering/BioServe/missions.html

Steam Engine Exhibit

Don Hillier speaks to guests, faculty, and staff at the festivities celebrating the new ITLL Steam Engine Exhibit.

The ITLL welcomed a new addition to its hands-on, engineering outreach displays as part of the First Friday celebration, Feb. 6. The Steam Engine Exhibit displays a series of fully functional, hand-tooled model steam engines by the exhibit creator, Don Hillier. Guests, faculty, and staff celebrated the gift after a few words from Hillier and a presentation of a thank you plaque by Associate Dean for Education John Bennett. Enjoy the exhibit on  level one of the ITLL overlooking the main laboratory plaza; hands-on controls are coming soon.

Honors and Awards
Programs
The Multicultural Engineering Program has been selected to receive a Diversity Service Recognition Award from the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs.  The awards ceremony will be held on Feb. 27 at the Ninth Annual Campus Diversity Summit, "Revitalizing Community: From Hope to Action" at the UMC Ballroom.

Faculty
Regan Zane of Electrical and Computer Engineering has received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. The award, which provides $400,000 over four years for teaching and research, will support the development of innovations in energy-efficient lighting systems through advanced modeling, control algorithm research, and hardware realization. The educational portion of the grant will focus on development of the first EE curriculum in the United States dedicated to energy-efficient lighting systems.

Roger “Buzz” King of Computer Science has been invited by the Smithsonian to serve as a founder of the Smithsonian's Encyclopedia of Life--a project that is expected to be of the same magnitude and importance as the Human Genome Project. The goal is to build a Web portal that centralizes access to information on all known species of the planet. There will be about 25 leading scientists and technologists in the group.

Dan Frangopol of CEAE has been named editor in chief of a new journal called Structure and Infrastructure Engineering: Maintenance, Management, Life-Cycle Design and Performance, published by the Taylor & Francis Group. The first issue is scheduled for October 2004.

Jim Maslanik of Aerospace Engineering and the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR) has won a new $1 million grant from NASA for “Investigations of Sea Ice State Using Multisensor Data, Time History, and Lagrangian Tracking.”

Staff
Francesca Iovine, who serves as assistant to the research group on artificial intelligence in Computer Science, received the Employee Recognition Award for December.

Gloria Makarevich, administrative assistant/receptionist in the Dean’s Office, received the Employee Recognition Award for January.

Mike Elliott, laboratory coordinator for the ITLL, received the Employee Recognition Award for February.
