Fast Facts
The multi-institutional TeachEngineering team, led by CU-Boulder’s Jackie Sullivan, released a new version of its K-12 digital library Oct 8, in which all 700+ lessons and activities are aligned to the K-12 math and science standards of all 50 states. The project required 24 million (yes million!) alignments of standards, a process that took many months.

Walk on water? Sure, no problem...
First-year engineering student Kass Kaiser demonstrates his team’s "walk on water" project at the Dec. 6 Engineering Design Expo. Boulder enjoyed above-average temperatures during the event, which spilled out of the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory onto the adjacent Herbst Plaza because there were so many projects.

The college’s Fall Engineering Design Expo reached new heights of participation and popularity this year, with an estimated 800 to 900 people (including students) attending the event. The Expo showcased the work of 400 undergraduate engineering students, including 11 sections of GEEN 1400, the First-Year Engineering Projects course. A total of 83 projects were presented to the public, the greatest ever for the fall event. Team Speed Racer's Mach 5 Lego robot won the People's Choice Award.

Novel Energy Research Presented at Symposium

CU faculty, research associates, and graduate students displayed their novel ideas for research on energy and related climate change or sustainability issues at the Nov. 17 Energy Research Symposium at the University Memorial Center.

Researchers from NREL, NOAA, NCAR and NIST also participated, with topics ranging from new energy materials to nanotechnology, biofuel production, and carbon capture. More than 140 posters were displayed at the symposium.

A seed grant competition with awards up to $50,000 is now under way. The deadline for proposals is Jan. 16. >>More info

Dual PhD Established with Chilean University
A dual degree program for engineering doctoral students has been established by the University of Colorado at Boulder and Pontificia Universidad Católica (Catholic University) in Chile. CU-Boulder Vice Chancellor Stein Sture traveled to Santiago in October to sign the agreement, which was initiated two years ago when Keith Molenaar of civil, environmental and architectural engineering was a visiting professor there.

The agreement provides an avenue for research collaboration and will give doctoral students the opportunity to live and work abroad in collaboration with an important South American university. Students who receive a master’s degree from either school are eligible for admission to the doctoral program and can receive a doctorate degree recognized in both countries.

Honors & Awards
