High School Honors Institute

A total of 274 high school juniors and seniors attended the college’s 37th annual High School Honors Institute, Aug. 1-4. The group included 80 women, 24 high school students from outside Colorado, 5 secondary students from England, and 17 scholarship recipients.

Students participated in mini-courses with laboratory demonstrations in two selected areas of interest, field trips to local engineering facilities, boat building and egg drop competitions, and student and industry panel sessions. Twenty-eight practicing engineers from supporting businesses assisted with the program, along with 34 engineering students who served as group leaders and sources of information for students and parents.

Thanks to Kristin Germain, who directed the program, along with Gretchen Lee, Lindsay Marek, Sherry Snyder, guest speaker Lucy Sanders, and all the department coordinators and faculty and graduate student presenters who helped to make the program a success.

Computers Donated to Afghanistan

Engineering faculty at Kabul University along with students at a women’s vocational training center in Afghanistan are making use of 20 used Pentium III computers donated by the college this summer. Professor Bernard Amadei helped to arrange the donation with Wahid Omar of Afghans4Tomorrow, a local organization that is partnering with Engineers Without Borders on reconstruction projects to help the impoverished country.

"We are very, very grateful," Omar said. "The University of Kabul was in very bad shape and had no computers at all."  The vocational and training center in Kabul enrolls women between the ages of 12 and 20, who were deprived of education under the Taliban. They now have an established computer room and teacher, Omar said. Several computers also were donated to a village in the Wardack province where a new school is under construction. For additional information, visit http://afghans4tomorrow.com or e-mail Wahid Omar at Womar93257@aol.com
