SPRING BREAK The CU chapter of the Architectural Engineering Institute carried out a second Spring Break service project with Habitat for Humanity this year. Thirteen students spent the week in Taos, N.M., working on two adobe homes, one for a single mother of four and the other for a single female artist. The trip was organized by AEI student president Kirby Beegles, other officers, and faculty advisor Bob Davis. Merrick & Co. joined the college and CEAE department in helping to sponsor the project.

Engineering Awards Banquet
The college will honor four distinguished alumni at the Engineering Awards Banquet on April 21. The awardees are:

l Subrata Chakrabarti (MS MechEngr’64, PhD’68), whose pioneering work in offshore mechanics has had a significant effect on the understanding of wave forces on marine structures

l Kumiyo Nakakoji (PhD CompSci’93), professor with the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, and pioneer blending the computer and cognitive sciences in Japan

l Jim Tighe (AeroEngr’97), aerodynamicist and design engineer on SpaceShipOne, the space-plane that won the $10 million Ansari-X Prize in 2004

l Alan Weimer (MS ChemEngr’78, PhD’80), professor of chemical and biological engineering at CU-Boulder who holds 21 patents for research and development in industry and the college

Graduate Program Rankings
U.S. News & World Report released its annual graduate school rankings on March 31. The College of Engineering and Applied Science was ranked among the top engineering schools in the nation at 39th overall and 22nd among public institutions.  Top 20 graduate specialty programs in the college included aerospace (13), chemical (18), and environmental engineering (20).

DLC Apprenticeships
The Dean’s Office is currently accepting applications from students for Discovery Learning Apprenticeships for the 2006-07 academic year. Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply by April 28 for one of more than 50 research apprenticeships offered by faculty throughout the college. Approximately 25 to 30 students will be funded at $10/hour up to $1,500 each semester. For more information, visit http://engineering.colorado.edu/

Honors and Awards
Congratulations to the following individuals on their outstanding achievements.

Faculty
Joseph Ryan of civil, environmental and architectural engineering has been selected to receive a 2006 National Notable Achievement Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for his work with the Lefthand Watershed Revitalization Team.

Leysia Palen of computer science was recently awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for her proposal on “Data in Disaster: Socio-technical Change in Response Agency & Public Communications.”

Michael Eisenberg of computer science was recently named a CU President's Teaching Scholar. The program recognizes an exceptional group of faculty who are advocates of and consultants for innovation in teaching excellence at the University of Colorado and who integrate their excellence in research and scholarship in their teaching.

Keith Molenaar of civil, environmental and architectural engineering has received a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research in Santiago, Chile during 2006-07. In addition to lecturing and conducting research in construction engineering and management, he will provide opportunities for Chilean students to participate in the Earth Systems Engineering and Engineering for Developing Communities initiatives at CU.

Roseanna Neupauer of civil, environmental and architectural engineering has been selected to receive the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Walter L. Huber Prize for outstanding research and the ExCEED New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.

Ross Corotis of civil, environmental and architectural engineering has been selected to receive the 2006 Boulder Faculty Assembly Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Steve George of chemical and biological engineering has been selected to receive the 2006 Boulder Faculty Assembly Award for Excellence in Research.

Janet deGrazia of chemical and biological engineering was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award by the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Bernard Amadei of civil, environmental, and architectural engineering has been selected to receive the 2006 General Palmer Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado. The award recognizes his contributions to the state of Colorado and to the advancement of the engineering profession, and their impact on future generations.

Staff
Kathryn Michel, accounting tech for the Center for Membrane Applied Science and Technology, received the Employee Recognition Award for April.

Students
Jan Weiss, a graduate student in aerospace engineering sciences, was accepted to the National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute for U.S. Graduate Students.

An undergraduate student team including Pascal Getreuer and Brad Klingenberg of applied mathematics, and Brian Camley of math and physics, was named one of 12 "Outstanding Winners" out of a field of 748 teams that entered the prestigious Mathematical Contest in Modeling, sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications. The team won the outstanding designation for the third year in a row.

Brianna Bethel of electrical and computer engineering has been awarded the 2006 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship worth $10,000. Nineteen such scholarships were awarded to students across the country, honoring the legacy of Anita Borg and her efforts to encourage women to pursue careers in computer science and technology.
