Engineering Management Program: In the past two years, the Lockheed Martin Engineering Management Program has seen its course enrollments increase 35 percent. The growth is believed to be due in part to an increasing awareness of the master of engineering degree in engineering management as a preferred alternative to an MBA for many engineering professionals. The combination of a technically focused curriculum, professors with real-world experience, and the convenience of distance learning are making it a more frequent choice for engineers seeking to advance in the technical ranks. The program also has significantly expanded its offerings to better address the needs of high-tech business. In the past year, four new graduate certificates have been created, allowing students to pursue a specific interest area, such as Leadership and Ethical Decision Making or Managing Applied Research, and later, if they choose, to apply these course credits toward their master's degree. Some of the growth is being generated through key partnerships. Working with the ROI Alliance, EMP has been able to offer Six Sigma certifications through the Master Black Belt level with completion of a specific course sequence. Beginning in fall 2007, EMP and the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering are planning to offer a graduate engineering management degree with an emphasis in construction management. The opportunity to earn a graduate degree in construction management through distance education will be the only one of its kind in the country. Alumni of the program also have a new benefit: the ability to rent any of the recorded EMP courses (15 weeks of lectures) at a greatly reduced rate. So if a graduate needs a refresher in engineering finance or wants to learn Six Sigma methodologies, the opportunity is just a phone call away. For more information visit: http://emp.colorado.edu
