College Names New Assistant Dean

Mary Steiner joined the college in August 2006 as assistant dean for students, succeeding Jim Sherman who retired in September after 35 years of service to CU-Boulder.

Steiner brings more than a decade of experience working with students, faculty, staff, and administrators in higher education to the position. Prior to joining CU, she supported the educational and research missions of engineering schools as a librarian at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University.

She holds a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan, and she worked in that field for several years before obtaining her master's degree in library and information studies from Rutgers University.

"We are delighted to have been able to attract someone with Mary's qualifications to this position," says John Bennett, associate dean of engineering for education. "She has made innovative and substantial contributions at two other outstanding engineering schools, and we are pleased to have her join our team."

Steiner's responsibilities as assistant dean for students include coordinating the admissions process for undergraduate engineering students, overseeing the awarding of scholarships, managing student records, monitoring student progress, and advising students on college rules and policies.
