Discovery Learning Apprenticeship Program

Undergraduate engineering students in the Discovery Learning Apprenticeship Program earn hourly wages while engaging in research with college faculty and graduate students. Positions are announced in early April, and applications are accepted through the end of April for apprenticeships during the following academic year.

• As discovery learning apprentices, undergraduates work alongside graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, and industry representatives, as collaborative partners on original research. Students bring a fresh perspective to the research team while also learning from their more experienced partners. Apprentices learn hands-on techniques, gain insight to a field of study, and learn life skills such as time management, flexibility and how to be part of a team. In so doing, they prepare themselves to be the technological, academic, political, and creative leaders of tomorrow.
• The Discovery Learning Center enhances the visibility and resources available for hosting discovery learning apprenticeships, while creating a sister facility to the award-winning Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory. The ITLL pioneered a hands-on learning approach in engineering education, which has been adopted enthusiastically throughout the college.
